A memento mori is an artistic theme that has been used for centuries to remind us that we are mortal and death is inevitable. While initially morbid, the true meaning of a memento mori is to seize the day and do what you can with your life. When carried daily, this memento can be a great reminder that your end will come someday too and so it is best to live now.
Worry coins come from worry stones, an ancient means for reducing stress and calming the nerves. You carry the worry coin every day, and soon it can become a tool that helps you occupy your mind when mulling over problems, help you pass the time when waiting, and keep your hands busy you need some distraction. I am happy to list these hand forged worry coins on my shop for sale to even more customers.
I start with 3/4" round and cut it to 1/4" pieces. This gives each coin a good weight in the hand. Not too heavy, but robust enough you can be sure it is there when you need it. After heating the steel to just under 2,000 degrees, I use my own hand forged tools to work the coin into shape. Since moving my blacksmith shop to New Orleans, these coins have been popular with the locals that stop by the forge. The skull design is a good reminder of what is inevitability next for anyone who carries it.
Each coin is finished with burned beeswax to give it a dark and rich color that will polish to the bright and shiny appearance after some wear and fidgeting.
Each coin is dished out on the front like a traditional worry stone, to give the thumb a place to rest.
The coins measure 1" in diameter, so just larger than a quarter. They are about 1/4" thick which gives them a great weight and feel in the hand. This listing is for one worry coin. Every single coin is entirely hand made, so there are endless variations between the them. However, each one I ship has an endearing personality. They are also very nice to have in small batches to compare and contrast the little details.
I am also happy to hear any custom requests you might have for your coin.
